George Barrett was born in Derby in 1882. In 1903 he married Emma Clowes. Around 1906 they moved to Wilsthorpe Lane, New Sawley where he worked as a twist hand in a lace factory. They had 4 children.
During the Great War he served with 1/5th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). He was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1st July 1916. He has no known grave, but his name appears on the Thiepval Memorial.
