Sawley did not have a public war memorial until the present structure at the corner of Lock Lane was unveiled in October 2006.
However, after the First World War, an ornate tablet listing ‘Sawley’s Heroic Dead’ was erected inside the church. And two of the church bells were cast in memory of the village’s Great War dead.
And, after the Second World War, a Roll of Honour was compiled of all 574 Sawley men (plus 13 women) who’d served in 1939-1945. Another small tablet (under the WW1 tablet) records that the electric lighting in the church was installed in memory of those who’d died in WW2. The Memorial Hall on Draycott road was also built to honour those who’d died.
